As obvious as it seems, the very first thing you need to jump rope is definitely a rope. However, there are an array of ropes out there in the market, which one should you choose? Which one is the best for you? Which suits you the best? 4 main and most common types of ropes will be introduced.

1. Beaded Rope

Beads of the rope are not just visually-appealing, they actually help you to find the rhythm. When they hit the floor, sounds are made, so it is particularly recommended to beginners. Also, with the beads, the rope is less likely to tangle while jumping and training. Meanwhile, jump rope beginners may be complaining  their rope is too light, beaded rope gives you some weight which allows you to learn to control it better.

Besides, there is the heavy beaded rope. Literally, it means that the beads are heavier compared to the previous one. With heavier beads, it gives you more feedback and is actually beneficial to your learning progress. For example, you learn to consume more energy to take control of the rope.

2. Speed Rope

Speed ropes are light in weight and designed for speed. Usually, they are used by more professional athletes as they have better control of the rope and need speed rope for more advanced tricks and techniques. So, it is commonly not recommended to beginners as they may not be able to feel the light weight while turning the rope, therefore becoming harder for them to pick up new tricks.

3. Nylon/Cotton Rope

This rope is probably the most friendly rope to your wallet and the easiest to find. You can simply buy a cotton rope or nylon, then you have your own rope! The material of cotton and nylon also means that it is rather light in weight. However, due to its weight and material, it will get tangled easily and will be harder to do tricks and drills.
